Cyclone ‘Gaja’ has formed due to Low pressure over the Bay of Bengal and it is set to make landfall between Cuddalore and Pamban today on 15 November. ‘Gaja’ is about 550km away from northeast of Nagapattinam and it will cross the shore between Pamban and Cuddalore today with a wind speed up to 100kmph.
Tamil Nadu government has declared that 30,500 rescue personnel were on standby and are ready to handle any situation. The government also recommended fishermen to completely suspend the fishing operations along the shores of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining Andhra Pradesh. Six districts Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukottai, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and Ramanathapuram has declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Thursday.
Havey rainfall in catchment areas can fill up the dams in less than 24 hours, therefore the Central Water Commission had recommended action as per the Standard Operating Procedure. Dams, lakes and rivers channels were being monitored continuously, said Tamil Nadu Revenue Minister RB Udayakumar against the backdrop of the CWC advising constant vigil over dams.
